Follow a day in the life of Wayamo’s Sudan team, as they try to break the cycle of impunity after the outbreak of war in Sudan.
The Wayamo Foundation started its programming in Sudan in early 2022, with the aim of strengthening the capacity of Sudanese civil society and legal actors to break the decades-long cycle of impunity for international crimes in the country. However, the onset of hostilities in April 2023 brought in-country programming to a standstill. Despite the challenging context, Wayamo has continued to develop the capacity of Sudanese lawyers, civil society actors and journalists to help document atrocities to the more exacting standards of accountability required for future court proceedings.
Taking inspiration from recent successes in the exercise of universal jurisdiction in the context of Syria, Wayamo has begun exploring the possibility of disrupting criminal activity in Sudan with the support of neighbouring prosecutorial and judicial authorities in East Africa. The arrival in countries such as Uganda and Kenya of mass Sudanese refugee flows, which among their number include civil society actors, victims, witnesses and even alleged perpetrators, opportunities to exercise jurisdiction for the commission of international crimes are becoming more plausible.
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reporting that more than 12 million people have been displaced since the beginning of the war.
Tens of thousands have been killed and injured including a substantial number of civilians who have been the victims of airstrikes, heavy artillery shelling and ground attacks on their homes and villages. Mediation efforts to put an end to the conflict have not borne fruit, while the humanitarian crisis, marked by hunger, disease and displacement, continues to deepen.
