The Africa Group for Justice and Accountability welcomes Fatou Bensouda as its newest member

The Africa Group for Justice and Accountability (AGJA) and its secretariat, the Wayamo Foundation, are extremely pleased to announce that Fatou Bensouda has joined the Group. Ms. Bensouda has a long and distinguished career in international criminal law. From 2012-2021, she was the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), and had previously served as Deputy Prosecutor of the ICC (2004-2012) and worked at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Fatou Bensouda, former Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), discusses the importance of judicial independence and the rule of law in highly politicised trials. She talks about the challenges she faced as ICC Prosecutor and how she coped with the pressure. She also discusses the impact of the ICC’s jurisprudence on international criminal justice in Africa, the importance of state cooperation, complementarity, and the role of domestic jurisdictions in fighting impunity.

On 22 September 2020 Wayamo Foundation Senior Consultant Mark Kersten gave the following remarks to the Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) on Libya, which was established by the United Nations Human Rights Council in June 2020. The talk focused on the need to investigate the nexus between international crimes (crimes against humanity, war crimes, genocide) and transnational organised crimes (human trafficking, extortion, drug trafficking, etc.).
