“Reviewing the record, forging forward: international criminal justice in Africa”

The Wayamo Foundation, along with its partners at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and NRF SARChi Chair in International Constitutional Law, University of Pretoria, will be convening a one-day public symposium and a high-level expert workshop in Pretoria, South Africa.

The symposium, “Reviewing the record, forging forward: International Criminal Justice in Africa”, to be held at the University of Pretoria, will focus on the review process of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the lessons learnt from other International Criminal Courts and Tribunals, and South Africa’s and the African Union’s relationship with the ICC.

The symposium will commence with welcoming remarks by: Dire TladiInterim NRF SARChi Chair in International Constitutional Law, University of Pretoria; Bettina Ambach, Director of the Wayamo Foundation; Navi Pillay, former United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights and member of the Africa Group for Justice and Accountability (AGJA); and Peter Wendoh, Project Advisor, Rule of Law Program for Sub-Saharan Africa of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

The opening address will be delivered by John Jeffery, South African Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development.

The objective is to ensure that members of the public, government representatives, diplomats, the media, university students, civil society and other invited guests have an opportunity to participate in discussions and so form a clearer understanding of the international criminal justice landscape.

A closed workshop will be convened on 13 March 2020 to reflect on the ICC review process and to provide a forum for constructive, well-moderated discussions amongst leading experts in the field. The workshop will be held under Chatham House rules and focus in particular on the three thematic clusters identified by the review process, namely:

  1. governance;
  2. judiciary and the judicial process; and,
  3. preliminary examinations, investigations and prosecutions.

Recommendations stemming from the workshop will be published following the conclusion of the event.

In addition to these events, and in its capacity as the Secretariat of the Africa Group for Justice and Accountability, Wayamo will also be convening the Group’s annual strategic meeting in Pretoria.
