The International Nuremberg Principles Academy (Nuremberg Academy) and the Wayamo Foundation will be organising an International criminal law course with a training-of-trainers component in Abeokuta from 26-29 November.
The Organisations have been engaged in projects aimed at enhancing justice and accountability efforts in Nigeria since December 2016 in the form of capacity building workshops for civil and military investigators and prosecutors. With a view to ensuring the sustainability of their combined efforts, the Organisations decided to expand the scope of their capacity building program to include an International Criminal Law Course (ICL Course) with a Training of Trainers (ToT) component. The objective of the program is to support and further equip selected institutions with the necessary skills and international criminal law knowledge to pass on to their network of relevant actors in Nigeria.
The course will be officially opened by Wayamo Foundation Director, Bettina Ambach, and Natacha Bracq in her capacity as Senior Officer for Training and Capacity Building at the International Nuremberg Principles Academy. Participants from the National Judicial Institute (NJI), the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) and the Nigerian military will be attending the course.
The Organisations have been engaged in projects aimed at enhancing justice and accountability efforts in Nigeria since December 2016 in the form of capacity building workshops for civil and military investigators and prosecutors. Seven workshops on “Strengthening Justice and Accountability in Nigeria” were held in December 2016, March 2016, June 2017, November 2017, May 2018, November 2018 and June 2019. To date, the Organisations have been collaborating with the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Justice, the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, the “Presidential Investigation Panel to review compliance of the Armed Forces with human rights obligations and rules of engagement” and the Chief of Army Staff. Through these workshops, the Organizations have also been able to enhance co-operation between the ICC and the Nigerian prosecution authorities. Indeed, the report published by the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) of the ICC in December 2017 and 2018 respectively, specifically cites the Wayamo and Nuremberg Academy workshops in the country and engagement with the Nigerian authorities.
