Wayamo Foundation East Africa Coordinator, Judie Kaberia, is among the ten winners of the 2020 Resilience Fellowship of the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime (GI-TOC).

The Resilience Fellowship is part of the Resilience Fund launched in May 2019 on the margins of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Vienna (Austria), a grant-making mechanism managed by GI-TOC to support local organisations and individuals in their efforts to  “counter the effects of organised crime”.

The 2020 Resilience Fellowship seeks to address “Disappearances Related to Organised Crime”, a task that will require Fellows to become ambassadors in raising awareness and contributing to countering organised crime and violence.

In the course of the fellowship, the cohort of ten will focus on killings by organised crime groups, missing migrants travelling from Africa to Europe, human trafficking and the harvesting of human organs, and arbitrary and unaccountable detentions.

The initiatives launched by the Fellows are expected to respond to the effects of transnational organised crimes, with the aim of creating awareness, influencing policy, and campaigning for protection of human rights.

Kaberia, a multiple award-winning journalist and media trainer with a track record of more than 10 years spent on international criminal justice issues, will focus mainly on human trafficking and human-organ harvesting in East Africa, based on her experience at the Wayamo Foundation which recently concluded a two-year (2017-2019) project on “Fighting Impunity and Ensuring Accountability” in the region.

This project’s designated goal was to build regional capacity to enable domestic systems to address international and transnational crimes. The Wayamo Foundation held several high-level meetings and training courses for prosecutors, investigators and journalists, with human trafficking and migrant smuggling in the region featuring among the key areas of discussion.

Kaberia (@Judiekaberia), who is currently Chair of both the Africa Check Foundation Board (Kenya) and the Woman’s Newsroom Foundation, also serves as Project Coordinator and Media Trainer for Wayamo Africa.
