The Wayamo Foundation welcomes the historic International Criminal Court verdict finding Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman (known as Ali Kushayb) guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur, Sudan. This long-awaited judgment is a milestone for victims and survivors who have waited for two decades for justice, and represents the first conviction by the ICC for crimes committed in Darfur.

Wayamo has been working with Sudanese civil society organisations, including Darfuri-grassroots organisations, in the quest for justice and accountability for both historical and ongoing atrocities committed in Sudan.

“For our Sudanese colleagues who document human rights violations on the ground in Sudan, it was incredibly empowering to see yesterday that their documentation can potentially lead to real accountability,” said Wayamo Director Bettina Ambach.

Wayamo has received numerous messages from Sudanese partners, camp leaders, and community representatives expressing their sense of justice and satisfaction with the judgment. Their voices reaffirm the importance of accountability and inspire us to continue our work in Sudan.

The wheels of justice may turn slowly, but they do turn. The long road to this judgment underscores why our current work — equipping civil society documenters with the skills and tools to effectively document international crimes — is so vital.

Through these efforts, we are helping ensure that credible evidence is collected and preserved, and that justice mechanisms — national, regional and international — have strong foundations to act upon.
